Commuting to and from Windsor

In this age of widespread personal automobile use and efficient public transportation, it is no longer necessary for a person to live near his or her place of employment. Some people commute to get cheaper real estate prices, others because they detest the noise and crowds in a city. Whatever your reason, this guide should give you an idea of how long your commute will be.

To Detroit

For many people who have the papers necessary to live and work in both Canada and the United States, Windsor offers nicer housing opportunities at more reasonable prices. Commute times between Detroit and Windsor vary depending on where in the city you live and work, but the distance between city centers can be covered by car in seven minutes. There are three crossing points and Windsor Public Transit runs a cross-border route between the two downtowns which costs $3.75.

To Toronto

Windsor to Toronto is not a commute that many people would choose to make as anything other than a temporary measure. Driving time via the 401 Highway between the two cities is between 3 and 5 hours depending on traffic and about 4 hours by train. A one way ticket from Via Rail costs about $56.

To London

Though the travel time to London, Ontario is much more reasonable, like Toronto there are cheaper, closer alternatives than living in Windsor, to commuting here would also be temporary. By car on the 401 it takes about 2 to 3 hours depending on traffic, and just under 2 hours by train. A ticket costs just under $37.

From Chatham

Commuting from Chatham, which is between Windsor and London, via the 401 takes about an hour in good traffic. Trains take a little less than that and cost $21.

From Tecumseh

Tecumseh is just on the eastern outskirts of Windsor. Commuting to the city via car on King's Highway #2 takes between 15 and 30 minutes depending on traffic. Windsor Transit buses #4 and #10 make stops in Tecumseh.

From Lakeshore

Further east along the Lake St. Clair shoreline from Tecumseh lies Lakeshore. Commuting from lakeshore takes 30-60 minutes by car depending on the traffic. There are no trains on this route.

From LaSalle

Just outside of Windsor to the south, LaSalle is another convenient commuting community. By car the trip takes just 20 minutes in good traffic via Malden Road. Windsor Transit bus routes #7, #5, and #6 make stops in or near LaSalle.

From Amherstburg

Amherstburg, which is further south than LaSalle, is a commute you can only make by car. It takes 30-50 minutes along Front Road depending on traffic.

From Essex

Via County Road #9, commuting to Windsor from Essex, which is south and a little east of the city takes about 45 minutes by car.

From Kingsville and Leamington

Southeast of Windsor, these two towns can be reached via King's Highway #3 in about 45 minutes to 1 hour in good traffic.
